As a busy mom of three/business owner/wife, life feels hectic most days. I often find myself desperately looking for ways to slow down and make things feel more organized and less stressful. That is probably why my Pinterest boards and other social media outlets are consumed with organizing tips and a million ideas for making life feel more laid back. If it sounds like it will help me keep my crap together, I am ALL IN!

One idea I stumbled upon is the "art" of capsule wardrobes. At first glance, I assumed this was something to put together and bury in your backyard for future generations, but that is definitely NOT what it is. A capsule wardrobe is something that you can organize in your own closet (not backyard) to help you put together effortless outfits suited for each season. This concept uses the idea of having specific types of pieces in your closet that can be mixed and matched to create many different looks...therefore making life easier at least when it comes to getting ready in the morning.

I may not be able to help alleviate ALL of the stressors in your life, but at least let me take one thing off of your plate. Ok, now grab something to take notes with, designate a section in your closet, and let's get down to business.

First things first. This capsule will focus on a Spring wardrobe. Each season, you can rearrange your capsule to best suit the changing weather and style. The cool thing about a capsule though, is it includes classic pieces that you will always have in your closet. No need to fear, a ballgown or an Hermes handbag are not staples for your capsule. Not unless you are part of the Royal Family, that is.

Let's start with TOPS. This section has the largest variety and is a crucial part of the layering process. Spring weather in Illinois has some major moodswings and is typically very unpredictable, thus making these layering pieces important to my capsule. If you are reading this blog from a climate that doesn't experience all seasons in one day, layering pieces are still important and will help to create more outfit options. Here are the standout tops to consider for your Spring capsule:

2 Sleeveless Basic Options: You can choose a basic/solid color or if you are like me and love stripes, go for one basic black or white and one striped in a color of your choice. I personally enjoy throwing a stripe underneath a blazer or blouse.

2 Basic T-Shirt Options: Just like your sleeveless tops, these basic tees will serve the purpose of both layering and being a stand-alone choice. There is nothing better than a basic tee and jeans combo to kick off warmer weather. Feel free to choose a solid or even throw in a print. You just need to consider what your wardrobe consists of and what you LOVE. That is what is most important.

1 Graphic T-Shirt: If I am being honest, my closet does consist of more than just one graphic tee. They are often my go-to and have been known to appear on their own or under a fun jacket. If you have more than one graphic that you love for the season, feel free to include one (or two) more in this section. I won't tell...

2 Blouse Options: I LOVE a good blouse and have found over the years that they are an easy way to look put together with minimal effort. If you have shopped with me at my boutique, I refer to these as "throw on and go" options, meaning literally that. You can just throw it on and head out the door! Another way I love to style these is under a blazer or unbuttoned over a sleeveless basic (see options above). My advice is to include a crisp white blouse as one of your options, but you can always choose any kind your little heart desires.

1 Lightweight Sweater: I know that when Spring has sprung, we all want to run to the attic and store away every sweater we have in hopes of it being too warm out. I GET IT! But having a sweater that is lightweight and in a light-colored tone is perfect for this time of year and can be worn as a layering piece or alone. Once Summer arrives, I promise you can store it away until the Fall.

1 Sweatshirt: A sweatshirt is a staple for a Spring wardrobe. It can provide the perfect stand-alone top option or help provide a layered option for cool nights. Bonus points for including a soft material in a bright, Spring tone.

Another addition to help provide layered options is the JACKET category. I love a good blazer or trench coat, and Spring is definitely a great season to showcase these beauties.

2 Blazer Options: Over the course of time, blazers have really become classic staples for any type of wardrobe. Having the versatility of dressing them up or rocking them more casual has also boosted the longevity of this chic outerwear option.

1 Jacket: I am all for a classic trench coat this season. They can be worn with just about anything, and always help polish an outfit. If a trench isn't quite your cup of tea, a jean jacket is also a great layering option. I can never decide between the two and have included one of each in my capsule.

2 Casual Dress Options: Once Spring arrives, I can't help but be excited about bringing out some cute dresses. I HATE to be cold, so a dress option isn't usually for me until I can have some guaranteed warmth and sunshine. Spring is also a good time to play around with layering colors, and textures while adding in different accessories to compliment.

Spring also provides a nice variety of what you can wear as a BOTTOM. Here are some suggestions of what to include in your capsule.

3 Pairs of Denim: Some people might include less, but I love a good variety to play with. Including a contrast of washes and textures is the perfect way to change up your outfits. The color and amount of distress can create completely different vibes. For Spring, you could also throw in a pair of white denim...unless you have three children like me. White is often dangerous.

1 Pair of Dress Pants: Even if your job doesn't require business casual attire, it is still good to include a pair of dress pants in your capsule. For Spring, I love a taupe or khaki hue to freshen up a look.

1 Skirt: Skirts have become quite popular this season, and I have been excited to play with the versatility of them. My favorite way to style a skirt right now is more casual with a pair of sneakers. It gives a put together look with more of a comfortable feel.

Pedicure season is upon us, but don't stress. Closed toe options for your SHOES are still quite appropriate.

1 Sneaker: Sneakers are my go-to and I am so happy that they are literally pairing with anything this season!

1 Loafer: The loafer is making a comeback again and I am here for it! These also offer comfort while kicking it up a notch in the "dressy" department. This "comeback kid" is a staple for your capsule and wardrobe.

1 Sandal: Warm days are ahead of us, so having a sandal option to throw in the mix is necessary. Try including a nude tone which will go with literally everything.

Don't forget the ACCESSORIES! Stocking your capsule with the appropriate handbags, jewelry and sunglasses is essential for changing up a look or adding something extra to an outfit. Here are my recommendations for this category:

2 Handbags and 1 Wallet/Clutch: Like my clothing, I love to have a variety of handbags to choose from. Including something casual like a backpack style, along with a more formal crossbody makes it more fun and easier to accessorize an outfit. Be sure to also include a fun wallet/clutch in a Spring tone for days you don't need a larger style.

2 Pairs of Sunglasses: I know I am sounding like a broken record, but having a casual and more dressy pair of sunglasses also feels important for completing a look.

Basic Jewelry: Feel free to let your imagination run wild within this category. Jewelry is so much fun and can change the whole vibe of an outfit. In my capsule, I have included a mixture of basic metals with more fun, bold pieces to mix and match. You can certainly add whatever you choose, but just remember to consider what it will all go with. The more versatility, the better.

And that my friends, is a capsule wardrobe! I obviously have more in my closet, but having a small, organized section like this is so helpful when I'm in a hurry or don't know what to wear. Customizing a capsule for each season is also a wonderful way to keep your closet organized and your outfits fresh.

These are all purely suggestions and you can certainly play with this idea to make it more beneficial to your day-to-day activities. Keep reading to see how I pulled all of these pieces together to create different looks! Thank you for reading...I hope you create your own Spring capsule today.
